The story of Freeman Hardy Sr. and his wife Sarah Rutherford in Dallas Co AL

copyright © Susan Taylor Aldridge The genealogy of Thomas Hardy and Phoebe Buford's son Freeman Hardy who married in Edgefield SC to Sarah Rutherford of Bertie Co NC. Sarah is somehow related to another Hardy line of Jesse Hardy and Celia Golding from Bertie NC. John C. Hardy who married Jemima Wilson was Jesse's brother, so far as I know. Freeman Hardy moved up to Pendleton Dist to be with his brother James Hardy by 1810.

Freeman Hardy in Edgefield, son of Thomas Hardy and Phoebe Bueford

Hi Kay
It is 6 in the morning and I can tell you the story of your family while it is quiet and dark outside. My darling children are your cousins. They are quite wonderful people and I have researched their roots so that my daughter could get in DAR which she is now. You can print this out and give it to relatives if you want. it kind of wanders around, so hope you enjoy it anyway.

Your family roots are in England over 400 years ago. They were some of the very first settlers of Virginia, coming after the Jamestown Colony disappeared. At first the Hardys lived in Isle of
Wight and Amelia Co. John Hardy was born ca 1613 and married Olive Council. Their son Richard b ca 1640 in VA married Mary Vincent. Their son Richard Jr. born ca 1699 married Mary Covington. There is a Mary Covington -born December 1684 Somersetshire, Great Kuney, MD. But the Covington name followed the Hardys to SC and to Alabama.

Three of Covington brothers (cousins ot the Hardys) came to Edgefield before or with John Hardy.
WILLIAM COVINGTON Sr. Lived in Amelia County Va.. sold his land in 1772. His
will is dated 1785 probably after he moved to Edgefield. He moved to Edgefield County South Carolina where a daughter lived.

Richard Hardy Jr and Mary Covington had William Hardy 1720,
Thomas born 3 Apr 1732 in Nottoway Parish, Amelia County, VA (your relation), John Hardy b 1740 and Richard Hardy ca 1745-50 who came to Edgefield after his brothers did. The part they lived in Amelia Co became Lunenburg Co VA where the sons married. Thomas married Phoebe Buford/Beuford/Bueford b: Aug 1741, daughter of James.

Children dates from Thomas Hardy family Bible (I don't have a copy, nor do I know where it is) Children of Thomas Hardy and Phoebe-

Thomas's dau. Phebe Reynolds is mentioned in such a way in the Will that she seems to be in ill health and has no children as of the will date.

Along with a cousin (Benjamin) Stith Hardy and Ann's brother William Williams, as well as their Covington cousins, John, William Jr and Joseph Covington (sons of William Covington), John and Thomas Hardy moved to Old 96th District SC after the Revolution. John to the Edgefield section before 1785. Abbeville was the courthouse for Old 96th District till 1785 so some records may be there. After 1785, each section formed its own court records house. Thomas Hardy found a place on Peters Creek near the Tyger River in the Newberry section of Old 96th. (Stith Hardy was their brother William's son.)

William HARDY b.1720 d.1790 m. Mary COVINGTON, daughter of Edmonds Covington of Essex Co., niece of Mary Olive Covington who married Richard Hardy, Jr., father of brothers John, Thomas and Richard Hardy who came to SC from VA.
VA Will Book 3: p.388 lists the will of William Hardy dated 13 Jan 1791. Wife - Mary Elizabeth Winn Hardy; Sons - Samuel, Thomas, Covington, John, Stithl; son-in-law Lydda Bacon; Daughter Mary; Brother Covington Hardy.

I show the children so you can see how they moved in family groups-children of William who died 1790:
1. Samuel Hardy married his 1st cousin Elizabeth d/o Thomas Hardy (William's brother) and moved to Tyger River, Newberry SC. Thomas was Freeman's father.
2. Covington Hardy b.1749 d. 1814 m. Catherine Buford d/o Henry Buford and Francis Corbin. Catherine's sister Elizabeth married Robert Crenshaw and moved to Newberry SC. Robert's son Stephen married Susannah Hardy, Thomas's daughter. Catherine Buford's brother Leroy and sister Mary went to Chester SC. Her cousin Phoebe Buford d/o of uncle James Buford married Catherine's uncle Thomas Hardy who moved to Newberry Dist SC.
Covington Hardy's children: Vincent, Charles, John C., Miles, Amelia, Letitia, Henry& Priscilla
3. Thomas Hardy
4. Stith Hardy went to SC with John Hardy and lived in Edgefield
5. Mary Hardy
6. John Hardy
Many colorful personalities have made a mark on Newberry's history. Emily Geiger, a young woman living in what is now eastern Newberry County, rode her way into the history books when she delivered a message from General Nathaniel Greene to General Thomas Sumter during the American Revolution. A Quaker girl named Hannah Gaunt helped defend her father's house against a Tory attack. At the time of the move there were many Quakers who were living in the section what became southeast Union District. The Quakers moved on because of slavery between 1800 and 1810. At that time quite a few plantations came up for sale. These Quakers mostly moved into TN, KY and the midwest like Indiana. Freeman may have found a suitable property first in Edgefield and then an even better one became available in Pendleton perhaps from a Quaker family, as both he and James moved to Pendleton between 1800 and 1810.
Freeman is in Edgefield census 1800 and seems to be adding to current land with an 18 acre purchase on Sieglers (Seaglers) Creek in 1800-

Ann Williams died about 1794 and her husband John died by 1799 in Edgefield (after remarrying a second time to Sarah Ingram).
Thomas Hardy died later than his brother John (even thought he was older) on 18 October 1814 in Union District. His wife Phoebe's father died in 1797. Below is his testament in SC, found first by Carol Hardy Bryan of Edegfield. Phoebe's father was James Beuford who married Mary Warren d/o Thomas Warren and Mary Elizabeth Hackley from Rappahannock Co., VA. James Bueford was the son of Henry Buford and Mary Osborne of Middlesex and Lancaster VA.

James Bueford's niece and nephew thru his brother Henry Buford were Elizabeth (wife of Robert Crenshaw below) and Leroy Buford who died in Chester Dist. SC. So Freeman Hardy's mother Phoebe Beuford was first cousins to the mother of Susannah's husband Stephen Crenshaw-Elizabeth Buford, making Susannah and her husband Stephen double 2nd cousins?

As I said, both Thomas and brother John fought in the Revolution. Thomas under Gen Washington. This qualifies you for the DAR. John sold his land in Lunenburg VA and took title to a property April of 1784 near an area called New Richmond on the Savannah River founded by a Virginian in Old 96th District, SC. Cheap land was available because so many patriots had been killed and Tories had fled. It was a burnt earth so to speak. John's land was near the Savannah River at New Hampton north of Cambelltown. http://john-hardy-ann-williams-family.blogspot.com/In November 1786 Thomas purchased land on Peters Creek, a branch of the Tyger River near Union SC, the land located across the river from Union District where their daughter, Elizabeth and her husband were living. Although it is stated otherwise, I do believe they were already in SC at this time, perhaps staying with brother John near the Savannah River. The reason I say this is that Susannah Hardy says in 2 censuses that she was BORN in SC in 1780. This family was a family which believed in education, for both their girls and their boys so I doubt Susannah was uneducated and did not know where she was born. This was not a "backwoods" family who had no idea who they were or where they came from. They knew exactly.

At that time the Tyger River area it was virgin forest with panthers and parakeets. There was already a cabin for the family, so they built the slave cabins first. At that time the Hardys worked along side the slaves and the slaves wore the same homespun handwoven material as their masters. It was not quite the slave-master scene that it was later. None of the Hardy slaves, as far as I know, were ever mistreated. Not that it is any excuse for slavery. The Hardys were of a refined class of southerner called "Virginia blue bloods." They were morally correct and fair to all their children. They were Baptists.
Thomas had 10 children and one son was Freeman Hardy (your relation) born 20 MAR 1771 in Virginia and died 20 MAR 1848 in Lowndes Co, Alabama buried at Old Town Cem. in Dallas Co across the county line. When Freeman married he lived in Edgefield near his uncle John Hardy. Freeman married Sarah Rutherford b: 31 OCT 1775 NC on 9 FEB 1792 in SC (died 1 JUL 1854 in Lowndes Co, Alabama) and they had Freeman Hardy Jr b: 3 JUL 1798 in Edgefield, South Carolina (in the 1850 census Lowndes) and later your relation Robert Rutherford Hardy b 1808 in Edgefield SC.

Diana Wallner email says:
... Mary "Polly" Hardy married Moses W Liddell Jr. Other people, especially the family that moved to Texas with her, say that her last name is Hardy. She was married in District 96, SC in 1815 to Moses W Liddell Jr. "The History of Gwinnett County, Georgia" states that Moses moved to Franklin Co, GA in 1814. It says that in 1822 he joined the Presbyterian Church in SC near where he lived on the border of the state. It says that they joined the Fairview Presbyterian Church in 1826 in Gwinnett Co, GA, then moved to Decatur in 1857 just before his death in 1858. It doesn't list when they were married but it has to be after his first wife Sally McGee died in 1815 and before Freeman Hardy Liddell was born in 1817. Freeman married Amanda Stover and moved to Monroe Co, AL in 1841/42. Moses Liddell Sr. list in his will that he owned plantations where Thomas Blair, James Jones and Wm. Mc Clusky lived in Pendleton District and Anderson Co, SC Wills, Estates etc. It also, states 200 acres on Devil's Creek branch of Big Generostee, waters of Savannah River, part of 640 acres originally granted to James Blythe. Wittness are James Morrow Sr. Abel Skelton, Jacob Clearman, James Russell. I don't know if any of this helps but it is what I have at the present.

Here is 100 acres owned by Moses Liddell Sr on the Savannah River in Old 96th, from land granted to James Liddell in 1775

Moses Liddell Jr mentioned in the will of 1798 Thomas Liddell.
Thomas Liddell has no children and bequeathes his land an possessions to the children of both Andrew and Moses Liddell Sr, his brothers. Moses Jr is mentioned as receiving a saddle.

A book has been written about Thomas`s family. The cover of it is also on my Robert Hardy site. Mr Kibler has a few things incorrect (like Thomas wife's name). But it is a very detailed account of the life of those who stayed on that plantation and that land. The illustration is of the house built by Thomas near Union in Union/Newberry District, formerly part of Old 96th SC.

Thomas Hardy was the uncle of our ancestor Robert Hardy who lived with his parents John Hardy and Ann Williams in the Edgefield part of Old 96th District of SC. The house right was built 1800-1825 in 2 phases, after having their having lived in a log cabin. A dirt lane of trees went through cotton fields on either side to get to the house from the main road. The book cover illustration is just to set the mood for the time when all this history began in Edgefield SC. It is a house which Robert and his siblings visited your relation, for sure.

Thomas and Phoebe's daughter Susannah Hardy
(Robert´s cousin, and Freeman's sister) lived in the house above briefly before she married. She lived most of her life in the cabin on Peter's Creek. It was Carol Hardy Bryan who first discovered the will of Phoebe`s father James Beuford, and uncovered that Phoebe was a Beuford, not a Jeter. I guess I was the only one who believed Carol because the book above has Jeter as her last name, but that is proven wrong. Perhaps Jeter was her middle name, and as they so often do down in Charleston, SC society they called her by her first and second name ALL the time. Instead of addressing her as plain old Phoebe. It would have been the custom to say the first and middles names as one word or name--and then that name stuck in everybody's memory.
1800 Edgefield SC
Freeman Hardy,15th person, has 2 boys and 2 girls in house along with a man his own age.

Also, Freeman's sister Susannah Hardy's future husband Stephen Crenshaw b: 3 MAR 1764 (s/o Robert Crenshaw and Elizabeth Beuford) moved down into Edgefield District between 1800 when he was still in Union and 1810 when he is in the census in Edgefield. They have 2 girls and 2 boys. But then Freeman moved out of Edgefield to Pendelton. Between 1810 and 1820 Freeman moved to GA and then Lowndes Co AL by 1819 probably. There is no 1820 AL census.

1810 Pendleton District SC Freeman Hardy
Freeman Hardy and his wife Sarah Rutherford had moved from Edgefield up to Pendleton District. Daughter Mary Hardy is the only girl in the Household at this time. There are 2 young boys and an older on in the 3rd column. After 1810 Freeman and his wife went to GA. About 1817 Susannah Hardy Crenshaw and husband, as well as Robert Hardy, who was still single, left for Alabama to buy land. On the way they picked up Freeman Hardy who was living in GA still. The Gordons also came- they were from another prominent Lunenburg VA family.

Robert Hardy may have lived in a similar house with his parents John and Ann not so far away in the community north of Cambelltown called New Richmond, Edgefield District SC.
John´s property was near the Savannah River off Big Stephens Creek and on Sweetwater Creek. I believe they also owned a large tract of Pine Woods which was actually on the Savannah River and would have been river upwards of Augusta GA on the SC side. They may have bought an undamaged house in 1784 with their property. Our ancestor Robert Hardy came to SC as a baby from Lunenburg VA with his parents (along the Philadelphia Road which went all the way to GA and on to Fort Miegs in AL) to the Edgefield District of Old 96th two years before his uncle Thomas got to the Tyger River area in Newberry District SC -- both districts were part of the Old 96th before 1790. I speculate that Thomas came with his brother John Hardy and stayed in John's house for a couple years till he found something suitable which ended up being in Newberry. An eyewitness to the time in the form of Susannah Hardy always claimed she was BORN in SC in 1780. This would mean that Thomas was in the area the last couple years of the Revolutionary War, a dangerous time in SC. His would have stayed with relatives from 1780 to 1786 when he bought the house.

John Hardy had bought land in 1784 near which is only a few miles off the road which is now route # 1 near Aiken, SC. It was only a few miles from Augusta GA and it was on the eastern side of Big Stephens Creek. The area was founded by a man from Virginia and called new Richmond. Robert Hardy and his wife Nancy Peebles Browning both immigrated to Montgomery Co AL where they met and married in 1823. Nancy came with her parents in a wagon from Greene Co GA not so far from Edgefield actually.

Freeman's sister Susannah Hardy and her husband Stephen Crenshaw went to Alabama with Freeman and Robert Hardy about 1819-1820. Although Robert had been before to by land. He paid taxes on the land in 1818 in Montgomery Co as it called then.
Robert Hardy's portion of Montgomery AL got cut off to become partly Lowndes County and others got cut off to become Dallas Co AL.

Freeman's brother in law Stephen Crenshaw was the son of Robert Crenshaw
(also "Greenshaw") and Elizabeth Beuford who lived in the Tyger River area where Susannah's father Thomas Hardy settled. Robert's father William was born
15 APR 1787 in Amelia, Nottoway Parish, Virginia. Don Owens says Robert's father William deeds 200 ac. to him Oct. 1757 - Amelia Co., VA Deeds 200 ac. back to William 2-24-1768. Both Robert and his son Robert Jr. are in Union Dist. South Carolina in 1800 and 1810. Probably moved there in 1787. Robert died about 1810 in Union Dist.. Robert Crenshaw, Sr. and is buried at his Farm Cemetery, Union SC. Will dated Nov. 27, 1810. Proved June 3, 1811. His children are listed: Charlotte b. 1762; James; John; Letisha; Jane; Lucreta; Martha; Robert, Jr.; Randolph; Stephen; and Frances. Robert, Sr.'s wife is listed as Mary a second wife (not Mary Shelton). His first was Elizabeth Beuford. Charlotte married James Davis. Frances married Thomas McDaniel.

In 1830 Lowndes is a Freeman Crenshaw who moved on to Mississippi and I have no idea who he is. On an 1830 census page with Susannah Crenshaw (Mrs. Crenshaw) is Freeman Hardy her brother and Daniel Hardy-- her cousin and brother to Robert Hardy--- as well as William Francis Browning, Robert's brother in law.Stephen Crenshaw was a surveyor and a Revolutionary soldier, with a large family, stores and stock, etc., and moved from Edgefield District, S.C.. He entered the land known today as Lowndes County (Hayneville), cutting the roads and bridges as they moved. Like Robert, he may have also still owned land in SC. Nancy stayed the first years in SC where she had the luxury of a home. After marrying her, Robert Hardy had taken Nancy back to his plantation in Edgefield SC where she gave birth to John B. Hardy in 1825. Robert pendled back and forth between his land in Lowndes and his plantation in Edgefield, and Robert spent time clearing land and building in Loundesboro, until finally1828, he sold everything in Edgefield. See document below. They had probably lived a long distance marriage between 1823 and 1826 with slaves helping them in both Alabama and in Edgefield. William ALlen Lansing Hardy, their second son was born in Lowndes in 1827. According to OUR FATHERS FIELDS, the Hardys worked side by side with their slaves in those early generations and I imagine his slaves helped him build a home for Nancy in Lowndesboro. On the 1st January 1828 Robert and Nancy sold the last of their land in Edgefield. (See doc. below) .
1830 Lowndes Co AL
R.R. Hardy is with his father Freeman Hardy Sr who did not die till 1848. mrs Crenshaw is on this page. That is Freeman's sister Susannah Hardy.

1840 Lowndes Co AL Freeman Hardy. practically the whole page is related in some way- lots of them as yet unproven-like which daughters of which Hardys married the men on the page. Off the top of my head, Moses Pearce came from Edgefield. His son was Lewis L. Pearce who was overseer for Mary Cartledge Hardy, wife of William Hardy, son of John and Ann. Robert W. Hardy (b: 25 Sep 1810 son of Daniel Hardy-s/o John and Ann-and Mary Roebuck from Edgefield SC). David Peebles was the brother to Nancy Peebles Hardy who married Robert Hardy, son of John and Ann. AT this point Robert has already moved up to Coosa Co. Then Daniel Hardy and wife Mary Roebuck, their son Miles Hardy b: 17 FEB 1818 in Edgefield, Daniel's brother John's son W.W. Hardy b: 30 Jul 1809 in Edgefield County, South Carolina d 31 Jan 1882 Dallas County, AL) m Elizabeth Wilson. Next after WW. is Daniel Hardy's brother William Hardy, husband of Mary Cartledge Hardy. He is the son of John Hardy and Ann and I have no idea why he and Freeman are living near the family of Jesse Hardy because I dont know of any relationship except Jesse's daughter Emily may have married a John Hardy. There are probably allot of Hardy daughters we dont know about and Hardy boys who married hardy girls. William Hardy's (Mary Cartledge) known children were
1. Sarah Hardy b: 1807 in Edgefield Co., SC
2. Robert L. Hardy b: 1811 in Edgefield Co., SC
3. John Hardy b: 1813 in Edgefield Co., SC married Eliza
4. Edmund C. Hardy b: ABT 1814 in Edgefield Co., SC
5. Ann Williams Hardy b 26 Jan 1816 Edgefield Co., SC d 21 Nov. 1852 married Boaz
6. Margaret Hardy b 12 May 1819 died 26 May 1833 in Dallas Co
7. Mary Hardy b 12 August 1821 AL d. 21 May 1865
8. poss. Arlitha who m Lewis L. Pearce, son of Moses
8. Martha Hardy b 1824 AL m. Peter Webster
9. Eliza Hardy AL b 1826
10. Caroline C. Jane Hardy b. 11 July 1828 AL died 12 Sept. 1856 married Joseph E.Cartledge (Mary´s nephew b. 5 MAY 1823)
11. Amanda Frances Hardy b 3 Jan. 1833 AL d. 5 May 1863

Map of antebellum Lowndes before the Rebellion where the family can
be seen in the 1830 census with 4 boys and a wife. Stephen Crenshaw
was dead already 10 years by that time. Robert kept his Edgefield
property for 10 years and traveled back and forth from SC to AL.
I imagine that the slaves were such a trusted part of the family that
Robert could leave them alone to work while he was gone. The Hardy
attitude was a little different than was popularly known. The slaves
wore the same homespun clothing that the Hardys did. Everything
was made at home and all food was also shared as well, at least in the first decades of the 1800s.

About the 1850 census page on which Sarah Rutherford is living.

There are 2 Hardy lines on this page. Two are cousins and one is the widow of Jesse Hardy Jr from the Lemuel Hardy line of Bertie NC

At the top of the page is the last part of the household of Celia Golding who married Jesse Hardy jr. How could Jesse be related to the other Hardys? is he related to Sarah Rutherford? jesse Hardy Jr's daughter Emily married a John Hardy but I dont know who he is. There are so many Johns.

The Whatleys are related forgot how...
Sarah Rutherford Hardy is living with her son Benjamin F. Hardy. His name is I think written in the Bible of Celia Golding Hardy. See Bible below. John Hardy Jr is next door. John Hardy Jr is the son of John Hardy and Ann Williams and is a cousin to Freeman Jr. your relation.

A neighbor is Susan Tucker a widow-she is probably a Rutherford relation, maybe Eliza A Haynes next door is Susan's mother or older sister?

After Eliza Haynes comes Martha Ann Key widow. She came with the wagon train from Edgefield after 1824. Her husband is Dr. Brazillia Key (related to Francis Scott Key) b.
12 APR 1797 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. Brazillia Graves KEY was married to Eliza Ann Hardy granddaughter of John Hardy and Ann Williams before marrying Martha Ann Mundy. They probably had immigrated further from AL for awhile and when Brazillia died 15 FEB 1841 in Fayette, Jefferson County, Mississippi, Martha came back to her land in AL with the children.

The first Hardy family in Edgefield was John Hardy, s/o Richard Hardy and Mary Covington. The second Hardy was Richard Hardy-John's brother- his children were born in VA and he appears in the 1800 census but he arrived before 1794 when John Hardy wrote his will. The next Hardy line to arrive in Edgefield was before 1810- John C. Hardy whose wife is Jemima appears in 1810 and her nephew is Thomas Covington. She probably came down from Bertie NC. Some wrote that Jesse Hardy came to AL from Edgefield where he had lived awhile so he must have been there sometime after 1800 or 1810.

John C. Hardy and Jemima Wilson documentation:
John Hardy's marriage to Jemimah Wilson is recorded on page 27 of the Marriage Bonds in the Register of Deeds Office In Windsor, NC. He is identified there as "John Croom Hardy" and the marriage was recorded on April 9, 1793. Bond was set by Stephen Buck and witnessed by Kenneth Clark.
In 1810 Jemima Hardy (I believe her husband is on a plantation across the Savannah River inside GA) is living next to widow Susan Lanier, d/o John Curry died 29 Nov 1818 buried Curry Roper Cemetery , Edgefield, SC and Keziah Lewis. They are a couple doors away. So is their son Lewis. Lewis Curry is on one side of Daniel Hardy s/0 John Hardy, and John Curry is on the other side. Jesse Jr was his brother. Jesse Jr married Celia Golding who lived in GA and then Dallas Co AL.
Jemima's neice Patsey (Martha) and nephew Thomas Covington were probably living with her in Edgefield in 1810.
Carol Hardy Bryan wrote on genForum:
"Edgefield County, SC Deed Book 30, page 345 Jemima HARDY to beloved nephew Thomas Covington and niece Patsey Covington, Deed of Gift, 1 May 1811, great regard and respect, Negro girl Winny with her increase, Winny to remain in my possession during my natural life should that be before said Thomas Covington and Patsey Covington now respectively aged twenty and eighteen, said girl is to be handed over and the money arising from her hire to be equally divided between said Thomas and Patsey. Witnesses: Henry Briggs, Thomas Ingram. Jemima (x) Hardy.
Proven May 1811 by Henry Briggs before John R. Bartee, J. P.
Recorded 15 May 1811.
"Jemima Hardy appeared in the 1810 census of Edgefield with the following persons in her household:
1 Male under 10, 2 males 16-26 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-45
This indicates to me that either her husband was away, or
she was a widow. She does not appear in the Edgefield census again. A
Jemima Hardy was a member of Hardy's Baptist Church which was on the
Carolina side of the Savannah River about ten miles above Augusta, GA.
She was baptised in Nov 1809 and deceased in Mar of 1814. Baptised in
Oct. of 1809 were John Hardy who was dismissed by letter Oct 1818, and
Mary was baptised in Oct of 1809 and dismissed by letter Dec of 1817.
This was the same church that John Hardy (son of Richard and Mary
Covington Hardy) belonged to and his sons Richard and wife Barbary
[Barbara supposedly a Holt]; Covington Hardy and wife Elizabeth Howerton;
Daniel [who married Mary Roebuck]; John [who married Clarissa Roebuck].
At the end of the next decade the Hardy children are making their
preparations to implant themselves in Indian land through Troop Co.
Georgia, and on to Coosa,AL"

Aquilla Hardy signed as to receiving "Sixty-seven dollars and ten cents in full of my legacy of said estate 29th of December 1828" bequeathed to him by his father, Jesse Hardy.

Per "Coweta County Chronicles," pg. 46 {and it references W.U. Anderson's "History of Coweta County, 1827}:
"Aquilla Hardy came in 1825 before the county was organized and rented land from an Indian, in, what is now, the Sixth district." he is thought to be the first white settler of the County. Aquilla purchased land in the Sixth District of Coweta County and had a trading post near Line Creek (now the junction of highway 34 and 54). The town of Kendron grew from that original trading post. He was a Veteran of the War of 1812 and was Postmaster at several places during his life.
